The category of K-pop encapsulates a plethora of different songs, bands, genres, concepts, and sounds. Boy groups, often known for their bass-heavy tracks and electronic dance music, are also no strangers to the “cute concept”. They also have their fair share of songs that are super cute, fun, and refreshing. Here are some of our favorites!
NCT Dream – “Chewing Gum”
It doesn’t get any more boy group bubblegum pop than NCT Dream’s “Chewing Gum” (haha, get it?)! This 2016 track is NCT Dream’s debut single and equates a heart growing with love to blowing a bubble of gum. An incredibly bright song, the repetitive and catchy chorus of “Chewing Gum” is sure to be candy to anybody’s ears.
B.A.P – “Crash”
Another cute song about the feeling of falling in love and pining for someone! Released in 2012, “Crash” sets itself apart from the rest of this 2nd generation group’s discography by swerving from their usual hip-hop sound and gearing towards something more upbeat. As they wax poetic about a girl they have feelings for, the B.A.P. members express the feeling of crashing into love, begging her to help their thumping hearts. “Crash” blends an upbeat summer song with alternative music to create this refreshing track.
TOMORROW X TOGETHER – “Poppin’ Star”
A song alluding to popping candy? Count us in! With peppy bubblegum pop instrumentals and joyful vocal delivery, this lively song equates hanging out with friends to popping candy that feels like electricity in your mouth. Complete with adorable choreography (which seals the deal with the most adorable dimple-poking), “Poppin’ Star” makes our hearts go “jjirit-jjirit” when we listen to this song too.
Astro – “Baby”
Arguably the kings of the cute boy group genre, Astro’s summer bop “Baby” is the epitome of cute and refreshing. Starting off with a pop of a soda can, “Baby” expresses the feelings of somebody who pines for their love interest, unable to sleep at night thinking about them. Incorporating a captivating tropical house sound, the members of Astro charm us with both a colorful track and music video alike.
GOT7 – “Just Right”
“Just Right” by GOT7 is the perfect pick-me-up song for when we feel insecure about ourselves. Being the perfect mix of touching and an earworm, the title track of GOT7’s third EP demonstrates that insecurities that we may see in our appearances are merely that — just insecurity. This track tells us to love ourselves and to be content with who we are, and that we are already “just right”.
1Team – “Vibe”
The quintessential song of good vibes, this track by 1Team can refresh you after a long day. One of the more chill songs on our list, “Vibe” is an R&B tune that coaxes us to put aside our burdens and dance, forgetting our worries of today and tomorrow to live in the present. Incorporating components of bubblegum pop into its instrumentals, “Vibe” allows us to revitalize ourselves without the stresses of life.
Stray Kids – “Get Cool”
Who could ever guess that Felix’s deep voice could fit such a cute song like “Get Cool”? Well, we could, because Felix’s voice fits with everything! But more than that, “Get Cool” envisions having a great day because of a pileup of lucky moments. From finding money in old clothes pockets to receiving a long-awaited package, this optimistic melody celebrates finding happiness in the little things in life. “Get Cool” teaches us to appreciate the simple serendipitous moments and achieve contentment through these instances.
SHINee – “I Really Want You”
The title says it all with this song, and the lyrics convey a heart blooming with love and want. The repetitive bass of “I Really Want You” gets our hearts pumping, as the catchy electric guitar riff indicates the excitement of falling in love. This track blends elements of funk and retro music, as well as uplifting vocals in an explosive chorus that showcase the members’ vocal skills in typical SHINee fashion.
EXO – “XOXO”
Another R&B-oriented track on our list, “XOXO” is the sweetest love letter promising to show affection through soft kisses (X) and warm embraces (O). These actions are identical to the word “love”, as the saying goes, “actions speak louder than words”. Through hugs and kisses, the members of EXO express their love for their love interest and dream for their love interest to XOXO them in return.
Enhypen – “Polaroid Love”
Love is as old as time, and certainly as old as Polaroids are. One can say that a heart racing with love is old-fashioned just like Polaroid photos, which have an undeniable romanticism to them due to their retro appearance. Additionally, nothing is cuter than taking a Polaroid with your crush and watching the picture bloom on film, just like your love will! Enjoy this sweet song with somebody you love, and marvel at how cute your Polaroids turn out.
