Being an older fan of K-pop can sometimes feel alienating. As the average age of new groups gets younger, it’s hard to find groups that make music you relate to. Allow us to introduce you to OnlyOneOf, a 6-member alternative R&B K-pop group consisting of adult members.
The group is best known for its 2021 hit single, “libidO.” The song garnered attention for its sensual lyrics, unorthodox music video, and viral choreography. However, fans will probably tell you that “libidO” is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to OnlyOneOf’s dedication to breaking the K-pop mold and producing concepts traditionally considered taboo in the industry. Here are four of OnlyOneOf’s finest B-sides to add to your late-night playlist!
picassO
Coming off of OnlyOneOf’s debut album, ‘dot point jump,’ “picassO” is a cheeky double entendre and art history lesson wrapped up in one. The song crafts a complex innuendo likened to the process of creating a painting of a lover and is littered with references to 20th-century Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso. Most notably, the lyrics refer to “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon,” or “The Ladies of Avignon,” a nude painting considered to be one of Picasso’s most controversial. OnlyOneOf has noted “picassO” to be their signature genre, art-pop, which is characterized by multidimensional storytelling and connections to other songs in the group’s catalog.
bOss
How often do you hear rookie K-pop groups sing about falling hard for someone at a nightclub? From the group’s second mini album, ‘line sun goodness,’ “bOss” tells a more straightforward story than “picassO.” With its groovy guitar licks and a catchy whistle loop, the smooth Nu-Disco track crafts an immersive listening experience that’ll have you moving like you’ve been transported to the dance floor! OnlyOneOf are always finding creative ways to be suggestive, and in “bOss,” the members employ airy vocals and choruses of labored breathing to drive the point home.
byredO
In contrast to the more upbeat “bOss,” “byredO” tells the story of a once sweet love turned bitter. The title references the famous luxury brand of the same name, known for its iconic perfume line. Similarly, OnlyOneOf likens a soured love to a perfume that becomes unpleasant when excessively sprayed. Additionally, with lush strings, haunting piano melodies, and rich brass instrumentation, “byredo” tells a story of overindulgence and obsession. OnlyOneOf has never feared showing the negative and toxic sides of love, even if it means taking on the role of a villain. The lyrics of “byredO” provide a nuanced perspective for fans to interpret in various ways, even referencing the group’s previous tracks.
ultimate bliss
Last but not least, true to its name, “ultimate bliss” will have you feeling like you’re floating in the clouds. The title refers to the Buddhist concept of Nirvana, a state of ultimate enlightenment and release from the cycle of rebirth. The track oozes with playful mischief as OnlyOneOf tells a story of gladly accepting divine punishment as a consequence of giving into their desires. The track’s instrumentation mirrors this contradiction, pairing fluttery piano lines with a bass-heavy trap beat. Finally, the song climaxes in the bridge, where member Mill’s vulnerable rap verse overlays a passionate piano crescendo.
