Kim Namjoon, or RM from BTS, is not only known as the leader of the acclaimed global superstar group. He is also an acclaimed lyricist and composer, and his music spans a variety of genres for everyone to enjoy. Here are a select few RM songs to sing along to throughout the day.
1. “Intro : Persona” — ‘Map of the Soul : Persona’
What better way to get your day started and your blood pumping than this energetic bop? This RM solo served as the intro for BTS’s 2019 EP, which introduces the album’s concept around one’s personality and character. At the chorus, he exclaims, “Persona / Who the hell am I / I just wanna go / I just wanna fly” almost like a daily affirmation. Yelling out this chorus before starting your day will give you the energy you need to power through.
2. “Champion (Remix)” — Fall Out Boy ft. RM of BTS
This unexpected feature from RM on a remix of Fall Out Boy’s hit single is another strong track to start off the day. RM affirms that “I will stay, I will wait and I’ll fight like a king / Even though I can forever ever be a king / I will marry this goddamn world, by my own / And put myself on a goddamn ring”, inspiring his fans to take on all the challenges life throws at them. The original song is a power anthem on its own, but with RM’s fiery verses, the remix was elevated to something more motivational. If you’re a regular gym rat, this is a great song to lift weights or jump rope to.
3. “All Day (with Tablo)” — ‘Indigo’
For something more fun and upbeat, the vibes of “All Day” from RM’s first album will deliver. Featuring Epik High’s Tablo, one of RM’s role models and mentors, this track is a typical RM song: a fun and funky beat coupled with deep and introspective lyrics. However, in the end, RM reminds his listeners that “You gotta believe it / You gotta be livin’ / You gotta believe it / You gotta be dreamin'”. If you’re taking a bus through the city or studying for an upcoming test, this song is the best option.
4. “Trivia : Love” — ‘Love Yourself : Answer”
Following the upbeat vibes of the last song, keep the fun going with RM’s solo from BTS’s third compilation album. This adorable love song narrates how simple love is and how natural it feels. This track is also adorned with pure and love-filled lyrics: “I just feel it / Like the moon rises after the sun rises / Like how fingernails grow / Like trees that shed their bark once a year / That you are the one who will give meaning to my memories”. There is also some clever wordplay that is just as charming, which has been broken down by this fan translator. Consider listening to this track when you’re going home from school or work.
5. “Bicycle” — BTS Festa 2021
Released during his band’s eighth-anniversary celebration, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic, this sentimental track serves as a gift to ARMY. As many ARMYs already know, RM is the only BTS member without a driver’s license—hence why he rides his bicycle to and from the studio, as well as on his days off. RM narrates his feelings from the time everything was shut down: “I don’t see no open cars, no open bars / It’s not bad, I’m all alone on this road / The minds of people are floating like an island / The night that might never come“. If you’re also a fan of biking, consider listening to this song while on a bike ride.
6. “SEXY NUKIM” — Balming Tiger (ft. RM)
If you have plans for a night out with friends, this song definitely sets the mood for whenever you’re getting ready. This collaboration with K-hip hop group Balming Tiger is one of RM’s most iconic features yet, as he delivers both a savage and seductive verse in one go. RM reminds you that there are people around you who need to stay humble: “That cheap-ass rollie and ‘rarri / Yo, what you doin’ boy? / I just keep it me / For you man, I’m a doom boy”. Take this time to remember that you’re one of a kind, and to remember your worth as your day winds down.
7. “Hectic (with Colde)” — ‘Indigo’
Whew, you’ve had quite a day! This city-pop track is the perfect song to listen to during your nighttime routine. Featuring K-hip hop artist Colde, this song illustrates the feeling of having no direction or losing your way, all against the backdrop of Seoul and the busybodies making their way. RM sings, “Yesterday was a hectic / There was nothin’ romantic / If I can just find a reason / To keep this endless chasin'”. Whether you end your day feeling more or less lost, this song is sure to keep you in good spirits.
