BTS’ hiatus has allowed the members to show their unique styles outside the group. From J-Hope’s ‘Jack in The Box’ to RM’s ‘Indigo,’ and Jin’s ‘Astronaut,’ each solo album sounds so different, even though they come from the same group. With each solo, a member never fails to surprise us with their sudden shift in sound. Jimin, the most recent member to release a solo project, has done just that. Jimin’s ‘FACE’ album was released on March 24 and has already broken countless records. Jimin’s solos before ‘FACE’ were soft and mellow but with the pre-release of “Set Me Free Pt.2,” we immediately knew Jimin had something new up his sleeve.
“Set Me Free Pt.2” is a single released before the release of ‘FACE’ on March 16. Unexpectedly, Jimin’s “Set Me Free Pt.2” is an intense hip-hop track about Jimin overcoming his pain and finally being set free. “Set Me Free Pt.2” utilizes a choir and orchestra of brass instruments, which creates a more cohesive and intense sound. The brass instruments are responsible for the boldness of the song, while the choir adds depth and richness; these two elements create the perfect sound for the theme of freedom. The music video features Jimin surrounded by backup dancers; the choreography is as intense as the song. The chorus prompts the dancers to encircle Jimin but, in the end, they lift him from the circle, signaling that he is finally free.
In contrast to the intense sound of “Set Me Free Pt.2,” the title track, “Like Crazy,” is a pop song that relies on its heavy synths and distinctive drum line. “Like Crazy” is inspired by one of Jimin’s favorite movies, also titled Like Crazy; like the movie, Jimin shows himself trying to mask the pain of heartbreak by wanting to stay in the dream he’s in. We see Jimin in a party setting, but his dazed expression juxtaposes the expressions of the happy partygoers. Despite the upbeat sound of “Like Crazy,” the lyrics are about escaping from the pain he’s endured from this heartbreak.
Jimin’s promotional run for ‘FACE’ has been successful, from making his US television solo debut on the Jimmy Fallon show to breaking the record of selling 1 million album copies on its first day. ‘FACE’ is available on streaming platforms everywhere, and make sure to show Jimin love on his Instagram.
