K-Bands like Lucy are not given the same spotlight as boy and girl groups in the K-Pop industry, even despite the talent and charms found within the music and the members. Lucy debuted in 2020 under Mystic Story with their album ‘Dear’ and the title track “Flowering.” As we reach their third anniversary, Lucy’s talents should be explored and recognized.
Who Is Lucy?
Members Shin Yechan, Choi Sangyeop, Cho Wonsang, and Shin Gwangil came together from their various backgrounds in music to create Lucy after being a part of the survival show JTBC SuperBand. The name “Lucy” comes from a dog that used to live near them as they began to practice together. The band Lucy consists of four members who all play different instruments. Sangyeop is the leader of the group, the main vocal, and the guitarist. Then, Yechan is a violinist, one of Lucy’s most unique draws. Next, Wonsang is a bass guitarist and sub-vocalist. And finally, Gwangil is the drummer and another vocalist. Each member plays a unique role in the group’s idiosyncratic sound.
What to expect on a first listen?
Lucy’s sound is light and refreshing without being too pop-leaning. Sangyeop’s incredibly unique tone lends itself to the uniqueness of the band as a whole. No other K-Band (that we know of) has a violinist! Yechan’s violin is perfectly balanced among the other instruments, it does not stand out too much but just the right amount. Wonsang’s bass skills create a good tone for the more moody songs by Lucy as well as keep the indie band sound alive through their more airy songs. Gwangil’s drumming and voice create a great final touch for this incredible band.
