On September 18th, 2023, Exo‘s D.O. released his second solo mini album, ‘Expectation’ (Korean title ‘기대’). The title track “Somebody” is, in typical D.O. fashion, a sweet, acoustic, folk ballad. The rest of the album includes six other tracks, for a total of seven tracks in all.
As per usual, ‘Expectation’ serenades listeners with calming love songs, heavy with acoustic guitars and soft vocals. The title track, “Somebody,” depicts a person who longs for somebody to love them wholly, even their deepest faults and darkest sides. This is represented in the music video, in which D.O. portrays a production staff member for a commercial shoot. He comforts the aspiring actress who messes up the shoot out of nerves. Their relationship eventually blossoms into an adorable romance.
Following “Somebody,” are the upbeat song, “Wonder,” and the pre-release, “I Do”. Succeeding these tracks is a unique rock track, “Lost”, which transitions back into another folk ballad named “Ordinary Days”, which imagines a future (“tomorrow”) with a lover. The final original track of ‘Expectation’ is “The View”, followed by an acoustic version of “Lost”.
‘Expectation’ continues D.O.’s artistry of soft, folk ballads with refreshing guitar rhythms that highlight his sweet, gentle vocals. The mini album comes two years after his first mini album ‘Empathy’, which featured a similar sound and themes.
