Seven months after the group released their single album “ONE HEARTED,” AMPERS&ONE made a comeback with their first mini album, “ONE QUESTION,” on October 22. As the album title suggests, “ONE QUESTION” continues to stick to AMPERS&ONE’s core concept of “becoming one” as it revolves around the theme of the members encountering their fans, ANDEAR, and how they are completing each other.
The album consists of six tracks in different genres, all of which showcase AMPERS&ONE’s expanding music spectrum and continuous growth since their debut in November last year, solidifying their position as one of the most promising 5th-gen K-pop boy groups.
“He + She = We”
The album opens with the title track “He + She = We”, an easy-listening dance pop that is about the members conveying their affection towards their crush, singing that “She” is the answer to their love formula, and that they are going to come together as one and complete each other. The funky house beat and catchy rhythm create a cheerful vibe and highlight AMPERS&ONE’s youthful image. The track was composed and written by CNBLUE’s leader and main vocalist, Jung Yong-hwa, the group’s label senior. Apart from producing the song, Jung Yong-Hwa even directed the members during the recording, and Seungmo recalled that his kind and detailed guidance made them feel less nervous and improved a lot in the process.
The music video of “He + She = We” shares a similar theme as their debut song “On And On”, where the members are college students having fun around the campus. The video starts with the “Seattle-line” members Kamden and Kyrell chatting in English, and Kamden shares with Kyrell that he has made a significant discovery. The video then shows the members enjoying various activities, such as playing card games, holding parties, and playing basketball. The music video also features scenes where the members dance to the choreography. The choreography incorporates many cute expressions, such as making the alphabets and signs in the line “He + She = We” using hand gestures, as well as energetic moves like jumping and kicking during the dance break, which go well with the lively melody of the song and fits the group’s lovely college schoolboy concept.
“Calling You Back”
“Calling You Back” is a lively dance track about the members missing the call from their crush, whom they had been waiting for all day, and nervously calling her back. The rhythmic beats give the song a groovy feeling, and the line “Calling You Back” repeated throughout the chorus is very addictive. AMPERS&ONE performed this track at a busking event before their comeback, and same as “He + She = We”, the choreography of this song also features many cute moves such as wiggling hands next to their ears as they sing “ring ring”. Jiho, Seungmo, and Siyun even filmed a challenge video for the song, using bananas as the phone!
“Slide”
“Slide” is an upbeat song that describes the members transcending boundaries and fearlessly “sliding up” towards their dream at full speed. They sing that nothing can stop them from achieving their goal and invite the listeners to follow them to reach high together. The song is packed with punchy beats and dynamic rap lines, which create an energetic vibe and highlight the group’s confidence in making a bold impact in the music industry.
Whip
Following three refreshing tracks, AMPERS&ONE demonstrates their powerful side different from the other songs in the album with a hip-hop track “Whip”. Like “Slide,” the song declares the group’s determination to pursue their dream. The heavy guitar riff, coupled with the intense rap, fills the song with energy and brings out the empowering message of the track. The two rappers in the group, Kamden, and Mackiah, participated in lyric writing for this track, and it is even the first time for Mackiah to write lyrics for AMPERS&ONE’s song, proving his potential in music production.
Over The Moon
“Over The Moon” is a sweet dance pop that illustrates the magical feeling of the members falling in love with their crush, as they sing that they are tied to her by fate since they first met. The lyrics also convey the members’ admiration and love towards their crush, singing that they are “over the moon” to be with her as she brightens up their gloomy life, and they promise to love her forever and will always be on their side. The intense drum beats and refreshing synth sounds give the song a retro touch and create a dreamy atmosphere, accentuating the romantic feeling of the track.
Fly
The album closes with a tender ballad song “Fly”. It starts with peaceful piano instrumentals and gradually develops into an empowering piece. The lyrics encompass an encouraging message that AMPERS&ONE and ANDEAR are giving each other wings to fly. Whenever ANDEAR is tired and thinking of giving up, they can turn around, and AMPERS&ONE will always be there to support them, and together, they can fly high toward their dreams. The members singing the touching lyrics with their soothing voices truly bring comfort and warmth to the listeners like a spring breeze.
