5 months after the release of their previous mini album ‘SUN SEEKER’ in September last year, CRAVITY is back with their 7th mini album ‘EVERSHINE’ on February 26. All six tracks in the album entered the Melon Top 100 chart, and the album landed in the top 50 on the Apple Music Album Chart in 6 countries, proving CRAVITY’s position as a promising 4th-gen K-pop boy group.
Not only has the album achieved immense success both domestically and internationally, it also demonstrates the group’s growth into more mature and professional musicians. Read on to discover four reasons why you should check out ‘EVERSHINE’!
A darker and more mature interpretation of “youth”
As one of the representative K-pop boy groups with youthful concept, CRAVITY has been showcasing cheerful boy-next-door image in their previous albums such as ‘Liberty: In Our Cosmos’, ‘New Wave’, and ‘SUN SEEKER’, where they explore the freedom and happiness of youth such as the excitement of falling in love, partying all day long, and pursuing their dreams without caring about anything.
However, this time CRAVITY expresses youthfulness in a darker and more mature approach as the album talks about the members’ journey from experiencing love, discovering the hardships and pain along the way, to persevering through them. The album also declares the group’s determination to shine even brighter after overcoming challenges. ‘EVERSHINE’ touches upon the dark side of youth, which diverts from the bright themes of CRAVITY’s previous works and adds a fresh perspective to the group’s core concept of “youth”.
Rap line showcasing talents in music production and singing
The two rappers in CRAVITY, Serim and Allen, have been known for their incredible lyric-making skills since their debut. In this album, the two members continue to participate in writing the lyrics in two of the tracks including the title track “Love or Die” and “Mr.”. Allen even took part in both lyric making and composing for the last track “Over & Over”.
Apart from demonstrating their talent in music production, Serim and Allen even surprised LUVITY (their fandom) by taking up vocal parts in “Love or Die”. They have previously unveiled their long-buried singing skills by releasing singing cover videos on YouTube, and now that they are finally singing in CRAVITY’s title track excited LUVITY, and many complimented them as all-rounders and hidden vocalists in the group!
Diverse music genre
Now in their fifth year of debut, CRAVITY has never stopped trying out different music genres, and ‘EVERSHINE’ is no exception. The title track “Love or Die” is a powerful drum and bass track with lyrics about the members’ will to fall in love with their crush regardless of hardships and pain. What is special about this song is that it is the first band sound title track in CRAVITY’s discography, which shows the energetic and mature side of CRAVITY and makes it refreshing to listen to.
The 5 B-side tracks are also of different genres, proving the group’s constantly expanding music spectrum. “C’est La Vie” is a groovy track that brings out the freewheeling yet classy color of CRAVITY, “Cherry Blossom” is a easy-listening and cheerful song perfect for Spring, “Mr.” is an upbeat EDM track filled with festive vibe, “Worst Thriller” elicit mysterious and dreamy atmosphere, and “Over & Over” is a lovely pop-rock that sings the members’ determination of finding their love despite challenges and failures. All six tracks together form the story of youth unique to CRAVITY.
Prestigious music production crew
The high-quality tracks in ‘EVERSHINE’ are created from the hard work of several renowned music producers. Apart from “Over & Over”, the production of all the tracks was led by Ryan Jhun, one of the top producers in Korea who has produced hits for numerous K-pop acts including CRAVITY’s labelmate MONSTA X and IVE and idol audition programs such as Produce 101 and My Teenage Girl.
More surprisingly, WJSN’s leader EXY also shows her support to her fellow labelmate by co-writing the lyrics for “Mr.”, demonstrating her lyric-making skills as the main rapper of the group. The professional music-producing crew made ‘EVERSHINE’ a solid album that offers a pleasant listening experience.
