On June 17, 2024, Jeonghan and Wonwoo, both members of the group JxW, released their single album ‘The Man’, marking their debut as a duo. JxW is the second official Seventeen subunit to debut after BSS (BooSeokSoon). ‘This Man’ includes three tracks – the leading single “Last Night (Guitar by Park Juwon)”, followed by “Beautiful Monster” and finally “Leftover”. The latter two songs are both solo songs for each of the subunit members, with “Beautiful Monster” being Jeonghan’s solo and “Leftover” being Wonwoo’s.
“Last Night”
“Last Night (Guitar by Park Juwon)” is a captivating track from ‘This Man’, with sultry vocals that entice and a Latin-inspired acoustic guitar that adds a touch of allure. The anti-drop emphasized the haunting, dark tone of the song during the chorus. None other than Park Juwon brings the Latin guitar rhythms in the track to life, as indicated in the title. Known for his skillful guitar playing and captivating compositions, Park Juwon is a well-respected figure in the world of New Age music.
Following the theme of night and darkness, the music video for “Last Night (Guitar by Park Juwon)” alludes to Jeonghan as Sandman, a mythical figure who puts people to sleep and gives them beautiful dreams by putting his sand into their eyes. Jeonghan lulls everybody to sleep and gives them alluring dreams, causing chaos in the city. The dreams are sweet and temptations, showing the slumbering the things they want to see, but are also dangerous, as the city falls apart. In turn, Wonwoo chases him throughout the dream world and the real world to put him to sleep and restore order. He also wakes up the people Jeonghan put to sleep in the real world, returning the city to normal. Consequently, the lore of the music video ties into the lyrics of the song itself. The lyrics of “Last Night (Guitar by Park Juwon)” narrate a tale of someone pining for a lost love in the depths of the night.
“Beautiful Monster”
The second track on ‘This Man’ is “Beautiful Monster”, which serves as the solo song for member Jeonghan. This dreamy R&B song,”Beautiful Monster”, also compares love to a sweet dream. However, in contrast, “Beautiful Monster” is a happier song, where love is a dream in which one (Jeonghan) wants to stay forever. Jeonghan is a “beautiful monster” who stops love from ending by preventing the impending wake-up. He also promises to protect his loved one from any nightmares that threaten the dream.
“Leftover”
“Leftover,” Wonwoo’s solo song, is the third and final track of the single album. This ballad, featuring piano, guitar, and string instruments, has Wonwoo singing about missing a lost loved one. The song explores the theme of longing for someone who has departed and being left with their wounds and pain. Despite the sorrow, Wonwoo cherishes the leftover pain and memories as a testament to the love he still yearns for. This comforting yet heart-wrenching song beautifully captures these emotions.
