NewJeans have made a name for themselves within the past year since their debut with their upbeat songs paired with clear vocals and catchy dance moves. The group recently released their second extended play titled ‘Get Up,’ sharing more hits and taking over the K-pop community.
“New Jeans”
The EP opens with “New Jeans” where they reintroduce themselves in a new light with a new concept seen in the music video: them as the Powerpuff Girls! The lyrics repeat, “New hair, new tee, NewJeans do you see?” The group shares in “New Jeans” that they are starting a new career chapter.
“Super Shy”
“Super Shy” was a song pre-released two weeks before ‘Get Up.’ The title song features the members gaining the courage to confess their adoration to their crush. The lyrics say, “I’m super shy, but wait a minute while I make you mine. I’m all shaky because you’re on my mind all the time.” The song also has a specific time frame where K-pop fans worldwide have taken part in the “Super Shy” challenge. NewJeans has released a song that is interactive and fun, very similar to their other releases.
“ETA”
“ETA” is a song showcasing New Jeans exceeding in a new genre of music. With a unique pop sound, “ETA” is an upbeat party song that is energetic and exciting. Many K-pop fans on Twitter have been praising NewJeans for their experimentation with this song as it is a very different genre than their previous releases. The song showcasing a unique concept paired with the catchy choreography, “ETA” will definitely be a memorable song in NewJeans’ discography in years to come.
“Cool With You”
Although the music video is very eye-catching and has a lot going on- with multiple scenes showcasing the members in different roles observing the main character, ‘Squid Game’ star Jung Hoyeon- the actual song is the complete opposite. “Cool With You” is a more laidback song allowing NewJeans’ vocal ability to show through with the calm and collected melody.
“Get Up”
After four songs, “Get Up” serves as an interlude in the EP. It is 36 seconds long, and the lyrics test the love between two people in a relationship. The full lyrics are, “Get Up. I don’t wanna fight your shadow. Meet me back in five if I matter to you like you say I do.” This is repeated twice with a lofty R&B beat in the backing track. “Get Up” is a nice break in between the album, separating the first four very different songs from the outro.
“ASAP”
“ASAP” is almost like ‘New Jeans” sister song. The song opens with, “Hey, it’s me again. I’m back.” Similar to the lyrics in “New Jeans’ this song is a reintroduction to who the group is. The music video is what makes the song very interesting though. Elements of NewJean’s other songs are scattered in the MV as well, making it very pleasing to watch
Listening to this album, any K-pop fan can tell the uniqueness of NewJeans concepts. ‘Get Up’ showcases the group’s ability to succeed in any genre they cover.
