The Japanese girl group NiziU has returned with “LOVE LINE,” their second Korean single. Although the nine-member group’s music is typically sung in Japanese, they have recently tried to promote both in their home country of Japan and South Korea. Since the release of their first Korean single, “Press Play,” in October 2023, “Love Line” is their most recent Korean release. The title track “LOVE LINE” and its B-side “What if” are the two tracks that make up the album “LOVE LINE,” which was released on Mar. 31, 2025. The single as a whole addresses themes of love and fate.
“LOVE LINE”
The title track for ‘LOVE LINE’ of the same name is a bouncy and colorful city pop track. “LOVE LINE” has a retro synthesizer sound, similar to 8-bit music, with a strong bass beat reminiscent of a heartbeat. The upbeat and happy energy of the song highlights the members’ bright vocal tones. The concept of “LOVE LINE” equates a crush to the fate line of a hand in palm reading. The lyrics also allude to the red string of fate, a belief in which two people who are destined to be together, or soulmates, are connected through time and space by an invisible red string.
“What if”
The B-side of ‘LOVE LINE,’ “What if,” similarly explores themes of fated love. This track is another upbeat track, this time of the Japanese rock genre, blending traditional rock sounds, such as a strong bass guitar line, an energetic drum set beat, and keyboard chords, with the more orchestral sounds of a light piano melody. A prominent synthesizer sound is also included in this amalgamation of genres, creating a unique sound that blends rock and electronic dance music. The lyrics of “What if” narrate a conviction that the love between NiziU and their love interest was destined – that serendipity would have allowed them to meet, no matter what.
