Fantagio announced in a June 7 press release that Korean girl group Weki Meki would disband following the release of their final digital single, “CoinciDestiny.” The single was released June 12. Weki Meki’s last comeback before “CoinciDestiny” was in 2021 with the extended play “I AM ME.” The disbandment marks seven years since their debut.
A Legacy of Trendsetters
Weki Meki first debuted seven years ago on Aug. 8, 2017, under the entertainment company Fantagio. The group consists of eight members: Ji Suyeon, Elly, Choi Yoojung, Kim Doyeon, Sei, Lua, Rina, and Lucy. Weki Meki is one of a handful of girl groups formed following the disbandment of I.O.I, a group created from the popular survival show “Produce 101,” similar to current post-IZ*ONE groups like Le Sserafim and Ive. Members Yoojung and Doyeon were former I.O.I members and, along with their fellow Weki Meki members, were known as i-Teen girls leading up to the debut of Weki Meki.
Weki Meki is credited by many K-pop fans with pioneering the “teen crush” concept that now dominates the 4th-generation girl group scene. “Teen crush” combines the “girl crush” concept with themes of youth, coming of age, and finding oneself. At the time of their debut, this new concept allowed Weki Meki to stand out among the prevalent girl crush and cute concepts.
Their debut mini-album, “Weme,” featured the title track “I Don’t Like Your Girlfriend.” Over the course of their career, the group has released five mini-albums, including “Weme,” two single albums, and two digital singles, including their latest, “CoinciDestiny.”
Saying Goodbye
“CoinciDestiny” is a final love letter to both the group members themselves and their fans, known as Ki-Lings. The song is an electric pop track with dreamy synth and vocals. The title “CoinciDestiny” stems from the words “coincide,” meaning to meet or come together, and “destiny,” meaning fate. The lyrics reminisce about the time spent between Weki Meki and their fans, describing their relationship as a beautiful connection where each party uplifted the other, creating a fateful, eternal bond. As the song will not be promoted, the music video serves as Weki Meki’s final greeting to their fans.
